In 1944, na de zege van Franco, verhuizen de 12-jarige Ofelia en haar zwangere moeder naar een landelijk gebied in Noord-Spanje, waar ze bij Ofelia's strenge en keiharde stiefvader Kapitein Vidal komen wonen.
