Barnaby and Troy investigate the murder of Richard Bailey who is found in his home in Badgers Drift hacked to death.
Bailey had recently received bad news from his doctor who informed him that he had a brain tumour. The are many possible suspects, including villagers who oppose Baileys plan to redevelop a major property, Tye House, into a golf course and residential housing estate and his childhood friend, Ian Eastman, who lost out on an opportunity to develop the new property.
Cully Barnaby gets an opportunity to work with Simon Fletcher, a one-time resident of Badgers Drift who is now a well-known director and also happens to be a childhood friend to Eastman and Bailey.
When a second murder is committed, the detectives must find a motive that is linked to events some 30 years earlier.

Ingenting är som det verkar bakom de välklippta häckarna i de pittoreska byarna i det idylliska engelska grevskapet Midsomer.
Under det sömniga bylivets lugna yta lurar mörka hemligheter, skandaler och ren ondska. John Nettles spelar huvudrollen som den humoristiske, tankfulle och metodiske kommissarie Barnaby.
En framgångsrik teaterregissör, Simon Fletcher, anländer till byn Badgers Drift med huvudet fullt av hemska barndomsminnen. Strax efteråt blir en byggherre, som just fått diagnosen hjärntumör, brutalt mördad med ett indiskts svärd som tillhör en kyrkoherde.
Barnaby och Troy utreder brottet och försöker ta reda på ifall det kan förklaras av att folk i byn hyste agg till honom på grund av hans byggplaner, eller om svaret ligger dolt i det förgångna.
