Un soir, Aubrey Fleming disparaît sans laisser de traces. Deux semaines plus tard, la jeune étudiante est retrouvée, blessée, inconsciente. À son réveil à l’hôpital, elle ne reconnaît pas ses parents, ses amis, ses proches, et prétend s’appeler Dakota Moss. Pire: la jeune femme affirme avoir été enlevée par un sadique, lequel tiendrait encore Aubrey captive. Imperturbable devant sa ressemblance physique avec la «disparue», Dakota semble toutefois ignorer qu’elle porte le nom donnée par Aubrey à l’héroïne d’une de ses histoires écrites dans le cadre de son cours d’anglais…
